February 2024 Fire Safe Council Meeting Updates

The Yolo County Fire Safe Council February 2024 was on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 via Zoom from 4:00 to 5:15 pm. The meeting kicked off with member announcements. Solano RCD shared information about the Spring 2024 Native Plant Sale at Berryessa Brewing on Saturday, March 24, 2024 from 12 PM to 4 PM. In addition to native plants, the event features fire safe landscaping workshops.

The Fire Safe Council heard a special report from T-Mobile’s Emergency Response Team and their capabilities to respond to emergency events and natural disasters including wildfire. Their support team can provide Wi-fi and charging capabilities to evacuation areas to support folks in disaster shelters. Additionally, the Fire Safe Council heard regular reports from CAL FIRE, Yolo County Office of Emergency Services, Yolo County RCD, Yolo Prescribed Burn Association, Solano RCD, and the local Fire Safe Councils. Notably, Tanya Meyer from Yolo County RCD provided an update on CAL FIRE grant and Early Action funding for fuels management work in Yolo County. The first CWPP fuels management project on the docket is the Highway 128 Shaded Fuel Break outside of Winters which is scheduled to begin in early March 2024.

Finally, the meeting concluded with an overview of the Highway 16 and Highway 128 Wildfire Awareness signs. The final draft of signs was showcased to the Fire Safe Council for approval. A few changes included smaller ignition source signs that will be installed along pullouts on both highways to inform travelers how they can ignite wildfire including cigarette butts, dragging trailer chains, campfires, fireworks, and parking cars in tall, dry grass.

The next Fire Safe Council Meeting is scheduled for March 27, 2024 at 4 PM via Zoom. For a meeting agenda and Zoom link, visit the Events Calendar, here.
