October 2023 Fire Safe Council Meeting Updates

After a month off, the Yolo County Fire Safe Council October meeting took place on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 4 PM to 5 PM via Zoom.

The meeting kicked off with a presentation from Zonehaven – a new alert and evacuation program being proposed for Yolo County. The Zonehaven program utilizes software and analysis to better plan and map evacuations in the county. To hear the presentation, visit the Youtube link below to learn more about this proposed new software.

Yolo County RCD staff provided an update on Early Action Funding which was allocated to Yolo County RCD from the County of Yolo Office of Emergency Services for projects outlined in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan. The funding will cover projects such as fuels reduction along Highway 16 and Highway 128, Rumsey Fire Buffer and FireWise Certification, Rumsey Ditch Vegetation Management, and a continuation of the Yolo County Fire Safe Council Neighborhood Chipper Program.

Other updates not included in the meeting due to time include:

Programs Update:

The Chipper Program hosted a Chipper Day in the Capay Valley on October 6th where they visited five properties outside of Esparto and throughout the Capay Valley. Currently, there’s two properties on the list for the next Chipper Day that will be scheduled for late November or early December. We need a few more sign-ups to make a complete Chipper Day – please spread the word to your neighbors.

The Address Sign Program is still chugging along (although requests have slowed a bit- averaging about 3-5 per month). We have created a map to track where we need more outreach. Alli will be sending out community mailers to households to raise more awareness of the program and our other fire programs.

The RCD has cost-share funding to cover wildfire resilience projects on private lands. Conservation practices covered under this program are: fuel breaks, clearing and snagging, herbaceous weed control, tree/shrub pruning, prescribed grazing (visit www.tinyurl.com/yolorcpp for a full list of practices). If you’re interested in learning more about this program, reach out to Alli Permann at permann@yolorcd.org.

Outreach Events:

Yolo County RCD and Solano RCD will be sharing a booth at the Winters Salmon Festival on Saturday, November 4th to advertise our work and programs including the Yolo County Fire Safe Council and Yolo Prescribed Burn Association. Please feel free to stop by!
