The Yolo County Fire Safe Council July 2023 Monthly Meeting took place on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 from 4 PM to 5:30 PM via Zoom.
The meeting kicked off with a special presentation from the California Department of Insurance about the Safer from Wildfire program. The program outlines steps that homeowners can take, like installing ember screens, that can result in insurance rate discounts. The presentation was followed by a period of Q&A in which staff from the Department of Insurance answered questions from the group.
The meeting continued with reports from Yolo County Office of Emergency Services, Yolo County RCD, Solano RCD, and the community fire safe councils. Yolo County OES reported on the status of the Agricultural Pass Program and the fuels reduction projects in western Yolo County. Tanya Meyer from Yolo County RCD reported on the status of the CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant application which was officially approved by CAL FIRE, granting the RCD and Fire Safe Council $500,000 for fuels reduction work and equipment purchases. Additionally, Meyer provided an update on progress for the Fire Adapted Communities grant that provided free air filtration systems to folks living in migrant communities throughout the county. Other updates included a review of the Yolo Prescribed Burn Association’s first burn and information from a recent Neighborhood Chipper Day that happened in Capay Valley and Winters.
Notably, the meeting concluded with an overview of the re-allocation of Early Action Funds that were previously allotted for a feasibility study of a siren system along the Yolo-Solano County line. Unfortunately, the siren was deemed not feasible and Yolo County Office of Emergency Services recommended re-allocating the money to support high-priority projects from the Yolo County Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
